/6 Today is my first #coeliacdisease diagnosis birthday 🎉🤣 I thought I'd share my story - it's a bit of an overshare but even if it gets one HCP to #thinkcoeliac and get the estimated 70% of undiagnosed people out there with CD diagnosed then it's worthwhile! @CoeliacUK
/6 I've had low iron and folate for the best part of 10 years, but that's classic for a teenage female yea?? I was also a pretty gassy person 💨 and always super tired, but every other 3rd year uni student was too right?
/6 I was at the GP for the usual prescription of iron and supplements because surprise surprise they were low again, and he asked if anyone had ever investigated WHY this might be happening! So he sent me off for some more bloods...
/6 My TTG (CD blood marker) came back off the scale high 😱 so I had an endoscopy (camera down the throat) which confirmed CD - I had a marsh score of 4, meaning my gut was as damaged as it really could be 😭
/6 So I set off on my #glutenfree journey on 5th April 2019 as a 3rd Year RD2B and now feel the best I have EVER felt. No more deficiencies, loads of energy and certainly a lot less gassy! I am so so thankful for that GP who asked WHY!
/6 The symptoms of CD are not just gastro 💩 They can include deficiencies, bloating, fatigue 😴, infertility🤰, weight loss, itchy rashes (dermatitis herpetiformis) and ataxia! So if you're a HCP and your patient is displaying anyone of these symptoms, make sure to rule out CD!
