I've never spoken negatively about working with a publication before, but I feel like I need to, especially because this publication, @i_weigh, says that they promote positivity and uplift the voices of marginalized people, but my labor as a disabled writer was disregarded.
Their content manager reached out to me in December, and told me that they were launching a branded content arm of @i_weigh, and asked me if I was interested in pitching, I did, and they asked if I was comfortable writing something on spec, which I said sure to.
I turned in my piece on time. I completed edits and gave them my W9 in January. After months of blowing me off when I asked when my piece, about someone with an aggressive autoimmune disease, would run. I was told by the copy editor that I would be told when it was running.
. @i_weigh told me it wasn't going to run and did not offer to give me a kill fee, despite doing everything I was asked to do. I've had pieces killed before, but not three months after I was told everything was all set.
This thread by @wudanyan makes me think that I might still be able to get compensation, as I did everything that I was told to do, or at least a kill fee. I was told that it was running. https://twitter.com/wudanyan/status/1246670927867215874
