The most common responses to our circumstances are feeling fear & the sense of powerlessness
The two are related
We believe we can control things (feel powerful)
& this will prevent fear
While many things are out of your control, let's look at several things you can control:
Most importantly, you can control your willingness to examine your own beliefs. This is the foundation of growth & change
If the beliefs you hold result in fear, you have the power to examine them
Most of the time, it's not circumstances that cause fear but our beliefs about them
You can control the sources you choose for input. More information is not the source of security. It is truth that sets us free. Choose wisely where you get your input. Choose wisely where you will not get your input.
You can control your ability to exercise critical thinking. This is not about "criticizing" rather it is about the ability to assess what you hear and see.
Consider the things you hear and see and ask yourself what they really mean.
You can control what you focus on. This is so crucial. You give power to anything you dwell on. This is a super power. Gather information but make choices about what ideas you will give your greatest attention to and preponderance of thought.
You can control how you choose to relate to people. While we may be limiting the methods by which we connect to others, true connection comes from vulnerability, empathy and genuine-ness, not just from proximity
Take the time to tell the people in your life what they mean to you
You can control whether you see others as valuable or only focus on your own experience
Kindness, compassion, awareness, generosity and more are all choices you can make. This is another human super-power.
You can control what you do with difficult emotions.
You can sit on them and try to swallow them or you can find creative and healthy ways to express them. Writing, talking to trusted others, artistic expressions all provide a healthy outlet for painful or uncomfortable emotions
You can control what you do with your time. Numbing and checking out are very different from rest and sabbath. You can choose to stay present of disconnect.
Creativity, connection and healthy expression will always feed your soul and often feed the soul of others.
As you think this through what are some other things that you want us to know we have control over....?
