Shouting into the void: A thread.

On Thursday, the episode of The Chase that I appeared on in 2016 was repeated. When it was first due to be broadcast, both the producers and a former student who had been on recommended not looking at social media.

Turns out that there are lots of people on here who like to watch along with the show and comment. I have the skin of an elephant so I preface the rest of this thread by saying none of it has affected me; I'm fortunate enough to be able to cope with strangers shouting stuff

Oh and if you're tired of these bits of social commentary, please don't read further. Twitter operates on the principle of us choosing what we read, or not. Unless illegal, my view is that unfollow, mute, block & report (as appropriate) are better than telling people to stop

First up then, a comparison to The Rt. Hon. Rishi Sunak MP. While I thank the right honourable member for Richmond (Yorks) for raising the profile of larger eared British Asians, he's several leagues above and there endeth the comparison.

Most of the comments are nice light-hearted observations on the edition of the show. People using social media to connect with each other and share an experience. I can see the value in that; it's one of the greatest positives of mediums such as Twitter.

Yes, yes, I look (a bit) and sound like Will from the Inbetweeners. In fairness this has been said many times before. Ask my school friends and they will point out the comparison without prompting.

Being a Barrister at some point probably doesn't help your cause if appearing on a daytime quiz. A tweet in 2016 suggested that if I was a former Barrister then I was either brilliant or terrible at it.

We've established the size of my ears. They are big. FA Cup big. Gary Lineker big. My two nicknames at school were 'Ears' and 'Captain'. (No time to explain).

The comments get a bit more barbed. I'm sure this is little more than what people shout at the TV as they watch such shows.

Correlation is not causation

It seems my gravest transgression was to sound 'posh'. This seems to break the daytime TV contestant acceptability rules.

I'm available for voiceover work should anyone need someone who sounds like me.

The final word from twitter however, goes to this person whose poetry rivals that of Wordsworth or Keats. To be clear, I have never used this answer in conversation or online.

As I said at the start, none of this affected me though no doubt someone will suggest or at least think that by posting it all, it did.

My reason for doing so was to highlight what an hour of being on TV can garner online.

Just think what people of even moderate fame receive on a daily basis and more. I can see why people step away from social media despite being a massive proponent of its virtues.

Oh and if you think any of this is bad, have a look at what is said of female contestants where this microcosm of Twitter sadly follows the wider platform and life generally. I may be a large eared, red trousered wearing so and so, but it pales into comparison.
