I would like to do a thread on baseball stadiums in the United States since some of you requested it. I’ll go city by city and post historical photos of ballparks.
The city I’ll start with is Boston. This photo is of the South End Grounds Ballpark known as the Grand Pavilion, 1888-1894 with a capacity of 6,800. It was one of three parks to occupy this land between 1871 and 1914, but this one was the easiest to get photos of.
The Huntington Grounds Stadium was located across the tracks from the previous stadium, and was the home of the team that would becomes the Boston Red Sox before they moved to Fenway Park. 1901-1911
A ball park existed on Congress street known as the Congress Street Grounds. This is the only known photo of the stadium taken in 1890. It was home to the Boston Reds.
Of course I’ll end with Fenway Park in Boston. The oldest Ballpark in Baseball. It is one of the smallest current ballparks based on capacity, and because it’s located in a dense neighborhood, has been renovated multiple times try and optimize seating with the constrained area.
Next up is New York City, and we’ll start in the borough of Brooklyn. There was an old ballpark built in 1865 called the union grounds, it’s where baseball first began in Brooklyn. Here is a drawing.
Up next is Washington park, which was the home of the Brooklyn Dodgers from 1884-1891 and again from 1898-1912.
A few parks stood on this ground, along with a stone house that served as Washington’s headquarters for the Long Island campaign.
Eastern Park is where the dodgers played in between the two Washington parks. It was built in 1890 and held 12,000 people.
And finally for Brooklyn, we have the magnificent Ebbets Field. Built in 1912 and home to the dodgers until they’re departure for California in 1957. It was demolished in 1960.
Moving on to Staten Island. We have the St. George Cricket Grounds. Built in 1886 it was home to the NY giants baseball team for one season in 1889.
Now on to Queens, NY. The only noteable stadium that ever existed in Queens was Shea Stadium. Home of the NY Mets from 1964-2008. It was built in 1964, so it has that mid century mega area feel to it.
Manhattan, NY. The NY giants played at a stadium called the Polo Grounds for most of their tenure in NY. This refers to one of three stadiums of the same name. The original polo grounds was built for polo and located near Central Park until it was demolished by the expanding city
The park and the teams moved to upper Manhattan and built a new stadium of the same name. Which was eventually replaced by an even newer stadium in 1911 which is the famous polo grounds.
The Polo grounds was home to the NY giants, and Mets for two years before it was demolished, from 1911 to 1964. It is famous for its Bathtub shape. It was located just across the river from Yankee stadium.
And lastly, in the Bronx, NY. We have the famous Yankee Stadium. It was built in 1923, heavily renovated in the 70’s and eventually demolished in 2008.
