The funeral of Archbishop Romero took place on Palm Sunday, 1980. The cathedral was too small to accommodate all who wanted to attend, so the funeral took place on the steps of the cathedral, with over 100,000 people gathered outside.
There were representatives from across the world. They included Bishop Jim O'Brien, auxiliary bishop of Westminster. Peter Bottomley MP (right) was also there representing British Parliament. Julian Filochowski (left), now Chair of the Romero Trust, was also there.
In the middle of Mass smoke bombs were thrown from the National Palace into the crowd in the square where a huge congregation had gathered. A stampede followed. Many were killed and maimed.

The funeral Mass could not finish. Romero's body had to be hastily buried.
