THREAD OF HOT TAKES: apparently isolation is the perfect time to watch all the stars wars movies for the very first time. drew is very excited for me. I’ve never been interested in the movies, like... at all. to the point where I groaned for years every time Drew brought it up.
but, alas. we started with A New Hope. which so far is my favourite. I really liked it, the classic characters that I’ve seen referenced for years finally came to life and I understood why and in which ways this movie left its mark on pop culture.
in a surprise twist that is actually not surprising, obviously Han Solo is my favourite character. but I actually like Luke a lot too, for all his flaws. and of course Leia is cool as fuck. I also thought there was a certain charm to the handmade effects.
and I felt like the actors were able to play with a sorta lacklustre script. also. Harrison Ford. I don’t think I need to say anything else here.
Empire Strikes Back was also really good, it felt more or less like it came right off the heels of the first movie, in terms of mood and environment and ~*vibes*~.
so I was TOTALLY game and excited to 6 because 5 had a twisty ending and I was officially attached to the characters. but DREW is making me WATCH 1-3 before we can watch 6 and yes I threw a tantrum.
I haven’t seen them all yet but I think if I were to watch them on my own I would watch them in release order. I can’t explain why, but it makes more sense in my brain. but the phantom menace... the phantom MENACE.
they told me it was bad. they said it’s the worst one. but honestly, I wasn’t prepared. the more time that’s passed since we watched it on Thursday night, the angrier I get. probably one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen. it was tone deaf, sorta racist, and just... bad.
pros: the kid was cute, Natalie Portman was cute, and the last 10 minutes or so with the fight scenes was pretty fun.
cons: terrible. all of it. throw the whole movie away. it felt like the whole movie was written and produced to sell me something. the whole tone changed.
tonight we watch Attack of the Clones. I’m betting it opens with a montage of Anakin traversing some obstacle course on a strange planet, with triumphant music. he’s trained now. time has passed. look how powerful he is. HES A REBEL THO! watch out for that black sheep.
a few things to add re episode 1:
phantom menace lost all credibility when it accelerated the technology used to *make* the movie— it’s supposed to be a prequel but everything looks sleeker than the original trilogy. also it’s a kids movie. also jarjarbinks... MESA NOT IMPRESSED
I also forgot to mention that my favourite surprise from episode 5 was Yoda. I always thought he was quiet and mysterious but he’s actually eccentric and silly at first, which I love. just casually eating Luke’s food and laughing to himself while he runs around the swamp forest.
me just now: Drew, if Anakin and PadmĆ© get together I’m going to throw up.
drew: ....well, you better get a bucket.

REALLY GUYS?! REALLy???
got about halfway through Attack of the Clones last night before I had to sleep. I..... can’t stand Anakin. I’m sorry don’t be mad I just think he’s the worst character in the franchise so far https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="🤢" title="Nauseated face" aria-label="Emoji: Nauseated face">
everyone is like ā€˜peace and order are important, I am a high ranking person of power, let’s get to work’ and Anakin is like ā€˜that’s cool and all but I’m horny’ and THAT’S on how even Jedis can be fuckboys
we finished ep 2 just now. I have to admit the last 1/3 of the movie was pretty good. the fights were awesome, YODA!!!!!!!!!! on to 3!
okay episode 3 was actually really good. the fight scenes were good, they cranked up the drama and it really worked? it was also sorta heartbreaking. and I got to finally hear some epic sound bites in context. #nooooooooooooo
can someone tell me why I dreamed that Donald Trump’s spray tan got washed off in a rain storm during a press conference and underneath it he was Darth Sidious? we’re all doomed. let’s hope my dreams aren’t prophetic like Anakin’s
okay adding to this thread real quick: need to document that after watching 6 and deliberating a bit, I actually didn’t like it as much as I thought I would. don’t get me wrong, it was amazing. but not the strongest movie in the trilogy or even the series.
