For today's #Archive30 we're discussing a #ConservationWin - again in our wonderful Giles collection. These images come courtesy of @No1Cathedral so thank you for letting us use them! This is some Giles art that's definitely seen happier days:
Giles ventured into animation during #WW2 working for the Ministry of Information. We have the individual sketches for each film ( https://archive.cartoons.ac.uk/TreeBrowse.aspx?src=CalmView.Catalog&field=RefNo&key=CG%2f1%2f1%2f7) but the longer rolls of art needed some love, so Canterbury Cathedral conservation worked magic: #Archive30 #ConservationWin
Here's a closeup of one of the animation rolls during treatment (thus proving our theory that paper conservationists are amazing): #Archive30 #ConservationWin
...And another! Paper is a funny material - the wrong temperatures and humidity can cause it to either become brittle or be a host for mould - and the quality of the paper impacts how it ages too: #Archive30 #ConservationWin
Here's how the back of these artworks looked after treatment! Compare that to the first image in this thread: #Archive30 #ConservationWin
Let's have a close-up look at how Giles' art looked before and after treatment. The top image is before, the bottom after: #Archive30 #ConservationWin
