So about the recent conspiracies on 5G and the Corona Virus my university colleague @tonyjoe11 who had a 5G based dissertation gave this lucid explanation over WhatsApp, so I felt I should share it on here as well.
“To start with, how do these technologies work? 3G, 4G, 5G. The fundamental difference is their spectral efficiency. What does this mean? It means delivering more data per Hertz. So this means the same spectrum that transmits information or signals at let's say 5Mb per second can
now do double or times 4 in the same second. And this was what my project was all about. Full duplex communication for 5G Networks with Self-Interference Cancellation. Which means when you cancel interference, instead of using only one channel(frequecny spectrum) for transmitting
and another one for receiving, you can use the same channel for transmitting and receiving at the same time. And this is what is called Full Duplex Communication. Half Duplex is transmitting on one channel and then receiving on another channel. Now you see that your spectral
becomes more efficient, meaning you can do more, send more data and receive more data, at a faster speed using the same channel and that is what is called spectral efficiency. This is one of the technologies of 5G. So breaking it all down, this means that 5G can continue using
the same radio frequencies that have been used for decades for either mobile services, WiFi, bluetooth, radio or televison communication etc but just that it will transmit more information/data at a faster speed. So, in this case, does it mean more radiation? No.
But now, let's even argue from the other perspective: Another technology used in 5G - Higher frequency of transmission(The millimeter-wave transmission)
To start with, let's take the US for example. They have approximately about 200,000 macro cell towers for 4G. But to increase connectivity, 5G requires that more towers be installed. This means a more denser network of cell sites. But does this mean more radiation? No.
Actually, the technology of 5G is different. While 4G uses macrocells., 5G uses small cells. What this simply means is that the cells are smaller and consume less power, making installation even easier and quicker. So in terms of radiation, how does this translate?
Another 5G technology is that it will transmit at higher freqencies. So what are the frequencies that 5G will transmit on?
5G will transmit on two frequency ranges. 1. The existing LTE frequency range (600MHz to 6GHz)- I already explained this above.
2. The millimeter wave band (24-86GHz) Why so? Because at higher frequencies, we have a higher band. That means more spectrum. More data can be transmitted. But does this actually mean more radiation? Actually at lower frequencies, signals are more reliable. Why is this so?
Because they can penetrate buildings and objects more. Higher frequencies on the other hand will be scattered. And that's why sometimes, you'll notice that your 4G network will disappear but your 3G will then come on and will still work. Or sometimes you even get edge.
Only that it becomes slower now (Less data per Hertz). So back to transmitting at higher frequecies, how dangerous are these frquencies in terms of radiation? We have two different kinds of radiation- Ionizing radiation (the one that breaks molecular bond and causes cancer)
and non-ionzing radiation(it means the type doesn't break molecular bond). So what kind of electromagnetic waves causes ionizing radiation and which ones have non-ionizing radiation. To give you a better perspective, the waves in the electromagnetic spectrum:
In order of their wavelength- Radio waves, Microwaves, Infrared, Visible light, Ultra violet rays, X-rays and Gamma rays.
The only two waves with ionizing radiation are X-rays and Gamma rays. The other waves have non-ionizing radiation. So where does Millimeter waves fall into?
Millimeter waves have a frequency spectrum between 30GHz and 300 GHz. That is, they are in between Microwaves and Infrared waves. So it means they are non-ionizing. They don't break molecular bonds. And just so you know, your TV remote uses Infrared.
Microwaves are used in your Microwave ovens and also in Aircraft communication. So you should know they are not something new. You've been using them for years.
So back to our argument, this means our Millimeter waves although have higher frequencies but they pose no safety concern. So it means, on both side of the argument, 5G does not spread diseases!” - @tonyjoe11
