#Thread No. 1: TOMAR clan of Rajputs

Tomar clan of Rajputs appear to have initially established themselves in Delhi & eastern Rajasthan area. Later, after fall of Delhi in 1192-93, some of the Tomar groups probably moved westward into Alwar & Shekhawati areas of Rajasthan.

For, even today some tracts in Rajasthan bear names like ‘Torawati’, indicating connection with the Tomars or the ‘Tanwar’ clan name; well-known amongst the Rajputs.

Tomar Rajputs occupied Delhi and its surrounding area; first probably as generals of Pratihara Rajputs, then as their governors & finally as independent rulers.

Some of the Tomar rulers, known on the basis of their coins and inscriptions, include Sallakshanpal, Ajaypal, Kumarapal, Anangapal, Madanpal, and Mahipal.

In the face of a spate of Ghaznavide attacks, including during the reigns of Mahmud Ghazni’s successors, the Tomars rallied to face the incursions time and again.

And, it seems that under the leadership of the Tomar king, Mahipal, a confederacy of north Indian rulers came together to recover Hansi, Thaneshwar and Kangra temporarily from Ghaznavide control.

Chauhans under Vigraharaj IV attacked on Delhi and captured it in AD 1151. His nephew, Prthviraja II, put Hansi, once been in Tomara possession, under a trusted commander. Even after capture of Delhi by Vigraharaj IV, Tomars continued to rule area, as Chauhan feudatories.

LAL KOT is earliest known fort in Delhi which is supposed to have been constructed in the middle of the 11th century CE by Anang Pal II, the TOMAR RAJPUTS of Delhi.

It is presumed that Anang Pal II peopled Delhi and constructed the Lal Kot between 1052 and 1060 CE. Cunningham has quoted the short inscription on Mehrauli iron pillar
"Samvat Dihali 1109 Añg (Ananga) Pal Bahi" which corresponds to 1052 CE.

Among the epigraphical evidences, the Palam Baoli Inscription of the time of Balban dated in the year 1274 CE (V.S.1333) categorically says "The land of Hariyanaka was first enjoyed by the Tomaras and then by the Chauhans. It is now ruled by the Saka Kings."

Amir Khusrau also mentions the palace of Anang Pal and the Ain-i-Akbari and a few other works are specific about the residence of Qutbuddin Aibak and Iltutmish in the FORT of RAI PITHORA which is none other than the Lal Kot.

Anand Pal Tomar's grandson Kosal Dev Singh founded Kosli in Rewari. Younger brother of Anang Pal Tomar moved to pathankot, from there they went to Nurpur (Nurpur, Himachal: was a princely state of Pathanias). There, they were called as PATHANIAS, a subclan of Tomars.
