as someone very local to Brockwell Park I cannot overstate how insignificant a number 3000 people is relative to its space and importance to the borough, and how nakedly disingenuous it is for cabinet ministers and journalists to be whipping up public outrage over it like this
closing major parks clearly has symbolic/rhetorical weight but will realistically only force people (workers!) in densely populated areas often without gardens who have been told they’re allowed out for exercise at a reasonable distance from others onto pavements and footpaths
parks are not only easier to regulate than streets, but people can more easily self-regulate their own distance from each other within the rules they’ve been given, which every photo I’ve seen of Brockwell yesterday actually shows people doing. You’re being told the wrong story.
