i just watched a video of a girl playing veronica sawyer and she knew that belting an A wasn’t in her range so she hit the note before it and then did a complicated riff down instead and considering how many men have written musicals with obscenely high notes for women i wish 1/3
making a creative decision to do it differently was more accepted? bc if you do that then people are like “maybe you should have cast someone who can hit the note” but as a director id rather have an actress who can creatively avoid hitting a note and nail the character than 2/3
and actress who can hit whistle tones and high belts for days but isn’t right for the role. i’d rather focus on acting ability and tone than “well who here can hit the high note in that one song”. the riff down was MORE impressive than if she hit the note. anyway stan hadestown
im muting this thread bc i would like my notifications back but as a director im going to try to put for more stylistic choices than “belting as high as you can” in my shows and auditions
