so i did some research and this is why #billboardcountthe10k really matters (a thread)
disclaimer: i am by no means a chart expert, i'm just someone with a means to try and ask for fairness due to a mishap. all sources are what i've found and i've checked validity to my best ability. this absolutely not meant to disregard the success of after hours whatsoever (1/2)
(disclaimer 2/2) or any other artist on the chart. please do not slander any artists while interacting with this thread; negativity gets nothing done here
this is how sales count on billboard as per chartdata's faq section; since all ticketmaster albums were cds, they would count as pure sales
the following information below this tweet stems from atvenu. atvenu works with nielsen soundscan to provide billboard chart information, and they work with live nation, who works with ticketmaster (you see where this is going)
information regarding pre-orders that will be counted through atvenu and sent to soundscan
why is this important? even though ticketmaster sent albums out 3/20, there's no way to be certain that all 10k copies were received before march 27th. in fact i didn't even receive my copy of calm until april 2nd, and i've seen plenty of people get their copies after the 27th
so, to work off of an assumption that all the copies redeemed from ticketmaster where shipped to fans before the 27th is a bit of a stretch. the album was released on time and all the ticketmaster sales were preorders included with our tickets
even the band themselves weren't aware of the sales counting until it was too late. it seems quite unfair on everyone's behalf when the shipping was not in their control https://twitter.com/5sos/status/1244667175375257609
there was obviously an error that occurred and should've never happened. this has happened before (zane's icarus falls album sales had a similar incident), but maybe this time it could be made right. without tea and sea sales, why is the album counted for the week before release?
regardless of what ends up happening, 5sos and their fans put a lot of work into charting this album well, it's just a shame that errors and potential assumptions have taken away a legitimate sales count. hopefully this doesn't occur in the future for a third time to someone else
