CMO Brendan Murphy speaking now.

Australia now has 5,687 cases, up 139 since yesterday.

"That is probably the lowest rise we've had for a few days and it does tend to continue the trend we've seen of flattening of the curve."
As of today, there have been:

34 deaths in people with Covid-19 in Australia.

91 people in intensive care.

33 people on ventilators.

~2000 people who have fully recovered.
Murphy: "We're increasingly confident that if people continue to adhere to what we've been asking them to do we can prevent a situation like we've seen in many other country of the world."
Murphy said 10% of cases in Australia are attributed to untraced community transmission and that is "what worries me most of all".

That is the reason social distancing measures must be adhered to, he said.
Murphy: "We all know just how infectious this virus can be. Just look at what it did on some cruise ships. 35 people in one wedding. The Qantas and Jetstar baggage handlers in Adelaide. It spreads very quickly."
"So we're in a good place at the moment. We are achieving good control because the community has done what we have asked. They have done all of the things in the main that we've asked for them over the last weeks and it's been hard."
Murphy explains, a bit awkwardly, that the easter bunny will be able to operate despite the restrictions because he or she is a sole operator providing an essential service.

But humans have to obey the social distancing rules, and can't go visiting or on holidays.
@deadwodger On community transmission, Murphy is asked if everyone should do what the ACT is now doing, which is random testing of people with flu-like symptoms.

Murphy says Australia is already doing "sentinel testing".
That means anyone who comes in to hospital with a flu-like or respiratory infection can be picked up even if they don't meet broader testing protocols. Australia has also, for the past month, tested everyone with pneumonia symptoms in ICU.
"We can't test everybody across the country with flu-like illnesses... As the testing is expanded to meet the needs, we still have one of the highest testing regimes in the world."

Murphy says no country in the world has enough test kits to test everyone.
Murphy says the Ruby Princess was "clearly good evidence, as was the Diamond Princess and the Artania, of just how this virus can spread in an environment like a cruise ship. It is probably the environment where it can spread more than anywhere else."
