Tom Dempsey made a 63-yard field goal! Sadly, he is now gone because of COVID-19. Rest In Peace, TD.
The 63-yard game-winning FG happened in 1970: Saints over Lions. Dempsey lived 73 legendary years.
Dempsey’s New Orleans area home was flooded in Hurricane Katrina. In 2013, he was diagnosed with dementia. The man’s life story was one of perseverance from the beginning.
Dempsey was born without toes on his right foot & no fingers on his right hand. He wore a modified shoe & excelled on fearless determination, not because of footwear. “How about you try kicking a 63-yard field goal to win it with 2 seconds left & you’re wearing a square shoe!” ✊
Dempsey played for the Saints, Eagles, Rams, Oilers and Bills from 1969-1979. He’s pictured here playing for New Orleans, where he nailed that historic kick at Tulane Stadium.
Tom Dempsey’s 63-yard distance broke the previous mark by 7 yards and was matched three times before Matt Prater connected for a 64-yard field goal in 2013 (for Denver in the first half at Mile High against the Titans). The 63-yard distance later was equalled two more times.
