as a nutrition student watching ppl trying to discuss keto, or any fad diet gives me THE biggest headache https://twitter.com/olivia_vault/status/1246157376325107713
like when will people understand that there is literally NO “”diet”” that’s gonna work for everyone. the only way for literally anyone to “lose weight” is through calorie deficit that’s it. everything else depends on a million factors
calorie deficit while still getting whole grains, veggies, healthy fats, lean proteins + exercise and you’re good to go that’s it. and that’s for losing weight but it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re being healthier
hold on lemme rant for a second. bc even the idea of creating a calorie deficit is debatable bc there are a bunch estimated energy requirement equations and none have been proven to be 100% accurate so you can even be sure what your starting point even is
and the problem with fad diets esp ones like keto is people thinking that is they lost weight then it worked. losing a lot of weight in a short period of time is dangerous and unsustainable. if you lost a bunch of weight quickly during ur diet it’s cuz ur body freaked
AND it makes it more likely that you’ll gain it all back. here’s my problem with keto: not eating fruit/veggies or very very limited amounts of it is stupid to begin with. everyone and their mom knows how much essential vitamins/minerals are in those
second of all: compensating by eating more meat and dairy. literally my worst nightmare oh my god for the love of god stop eating bacon. deli meats contain nitrates and are classified by the WHO as class 1 carcinogens bro 😭😭😭
but anyways back to my original point: STOP MAKING LOSING WEIGHT YOUR MAIN GOAL !!!!!!! if that’s what you hyperfocus on it’s so much harder to sustain. that’s why yo yo dieting is such a big problem bc the faster you lose the weight the easier you’ll gain it back right away
ok let me break it down - mon’s tips for actually being healthy:

Step 1: eat a balanced diet. get your whole grains (carbs are essential for brain function), eat vegetables at at least 2 meals per day, doesn’t matter what kind or in what form just try
(cont.) and BALANCED diet means that it’s okay to eat “”unhealthy” things sometimes!! don’t expect yourself to be healthy all the time. it’s not realistic and the more you restrict yourself the more you’ll overcompensate later on. eat a cookie you won’t die.
Step 2: Avoid processed foods as much as possible. If you’re craving something that’s “”unhealthy”” try making it at home or ordering from a local restaurant if u can. boxed/processed foods have a shit ton of salt + other shit n it’s not worth it
Step 3: Exercise (if you’re physically able to). think of it this way: diet is for the inside, exercise is for the outside. Do strength training exercises at least 2 times a week. it’ll have the biggest effect on how u look (if that’s what u want) and
(cont.) when the apocalypse hits you’ll have a better chance of surviving hhhh no but seriously strength training is the BEST for your health (again, if you’re physically able to - any exercise is good for you)
Step 4: avoid any “diet” that has any strict rules such as keto, atkins, whatever the fuck else. the problem with those, again, is that any time a diet requires restriction you know it’ll be so much easier to just give it up and say fuck it
(cont.) changing your outlook on what you’re eating and making healthier substitutions is so much easier to sustain for a long period of time which means better for you (mentally) and your body! let yourself indulge every once in a while it’s okay.
Step 5: focus on your overall health. i know good and well how damaging beauty standards are and body image is still smtg i actively struggle with, but try your best to make your health your top priority, no matter what size you are. weight =/= health never ever ever
ok rant over goodnight sgdhfkkshdhd
