Sigh.... All fun and games. But here’s the straight truth: the works runs on COBOL.

Why don’t you know this? Number of reasons, one is the systems and apps built around COBOL just work and are exceptionally resilient. The hardware is new and modern and backwards compatible ..
.. it can be swapped out without ever tweaking a line of code. Same with the OS’s - upgrades without any recompiling or code tweaks.

Most of the plumbing of the banks, airlines, insurance companies, government agencies, retail and healthcare runs on COBOL.

This isn’t a ...
... problem, it’s working as designed. Part of the reason there is a shortage of staff a because these systems and apps are built well and very reliable. Staff has been allowed to retire and jobs not replaced - either to cut costs or hire them in the new hotness ...
... they do this at their own peril. While it’s a skill that can be taught, the numbers of places that offer it are small.

Lastly, calling the systems “legacy” is a huge misnomer and shows some ignorance. If you mean “neglected” as in, haven’t updated the hardware or OS ...
... then neglected it is. If you mean has roots in the 60s,70s etc - so does that phone in your hand and the OS it’s running. Anyway that’s all. #COBOL
