From my own experience I would say that autism disrupts the normal socialisation process, but a lot of autistics do seem to genuinely pick a lot of things up, it just takes them until 25-30 or so.
One thing I’ve noticed about myself: my self-observation&self-description is really terrible!
Like my own mental model of myself does not describe my own behaviour.
This leads to misapprehensions such as “communication is sharing information”
Of course these misapprehensions also affect (conscious) behaviour, which can reaffirm the mistake! It’s pretty bizarre overall.
One conclusion from this — assuming it generalises (which I think it does) and admittedly kind of a dick move — is that descriptions of autism by autistics should be read critically. I suspect the only way out of this would be proper research,maybe borrowing from ethnomethodology
