Fascinating to reflect-in-action on the impact of the pandemic on #meded. In essence it has forced us to pose the question to what extent are our final years prepared by our curricula and safe to step up to practice??? Here are a few thoughts developed on this mornings walk...1/7
Firstly, those in support of competency based education are likely to win the day. Encouraging #meded students to have a comprehensive portfolio linked across years of completed key skills (eg consent, discharge, handover...etc) and aligned to intern tasks would be so welcome 2/7
Assessments that promote reliability and rely on assessing skills in entirely simulated settings may not be what we need. Rather more subjective and valid assessments involving real world uncertainty and patients would be more reassuring as #meded students enter practice 3/7
Thirdly we need to consider medical students within hospital settings as adding value to clinical practice. Learning through practice and creating affordances benefiting teams and patients being key. Ultimately #meded students learn through service if structured appropriately 4/7
Fourthly a test of how effective #meded students will be in terms of managing complexity is intrinsically linked to their abilities to practice incollaborative ready manner. Therefore developing programmatic interprofessional learning frameworks is necessary and not a luxury 5/7
Lastly as the discourse moves to student safety we need to focus on how to support #meded students wellbeing as a core objective of medical programs. The need to develop identity through embedding structures promoting reflection throughout programs or otherwise is essential 6/7
No doubt other important reflections exist but capturing a few reflections-in-action can help. One final thought is that current curricula approaches will not remain the same. This is a positive as we seek to grow our #meded practices to better meet todays healthcare demands 7/7
