Seeing a bunch of mentions about the ‘03 final against Syracuse. Those demons will probably never be exorcised, but here’s a couple stories from around that time some KU people may find interesting. Quarantine has me in a story telling mood..
Jeff Graves and I sat next to one another in the locker room during the entire 2003 NCAA tournament... when we got to New Orleans, we both made a pact that we’re going to win this sh*t and enter the draft
After we lost that game.. we didn’t see Roy until the day he announced he was leaving... in Lawrence my locker was next to Kirk Hinrich’s. Before Coach walked in and gave us the news, Kirk never said a word. He quietly told me seconds before he came in that Coach was leaving
That summer after the game I was invited to work as a counselor at Michael Jordan’s camp in Santa Barbara, Ca. MJ is a great bartender btw... not sure if O’Malley’s is still there or not lol. Anyway.. I get to campus and check in. They give me all of my gear and toom key
They tell me that my roommate hasn’t arrived yet and that there’s nothing happening until later that night after all the campers and counselors get checked in. Some of the counselors were Andre Igoudala, JJ Redick, Rashad Mccants, and a few pros showed up as well. Darius Miles
and Quentin Richardson were big names at the time. So I’m in my room flipping through my CD book lol.. just killing time until my roommate gets there and maybe we could walk around campus or something. I’m laying on the bottom bunk and the door opens....
No tall black guy.. no former Nike camp teammate. Not even another player I was looking forward to playing against... it was....

Afterwards we both smiled and he ended up being a cool dude.. but I’m still looking for the guy or girl that thought it would be funny to make us roommates for 10 days that summer ...
In case anyone is wondering why Jeff and I didn’t enter the draft... Aaron Miles talked me out of it. We were supposed to win it next year and all leave together. Jim Burr fckd me and so did 3 knee surgeries in 10 months after that... still wouldn’t trade it for anything #RCJH
