So You're Looking to Get into Reading during Quarantine but You Don't Want to Spend One Million Dollars on Books: A Thread
Option 1: Your Local Library (FREE)
Your library is prob closed bc of corona. The Libby app ( @meetlibby) has audiobooks you can listen to via the app and ebooks you can download through the Kindle app. Cons include waiting for holds & being SOL if you don’t have a library card.

Option 2: @Scribd (1 month free, then $9.99/m for unlimited books)
Don’t want to wait for your holds? Try Scribd! I’m new to it (thx @kylieinthesky for the rev), but they have quite a few popular ebooks and audiobooks. Cons: library is limited compared to other options)

Important addendum to option 1: some libraries are letting you sign up for a library card online, so check with your local branch! https://twitter.com/cecproff/status/1246601742650945537?s=21 https://twitter.com/cecproff/status/1246601742650945537
Option 3: Kindle ($, varies)
I am not a Kindle expert, but currently they are offering 2 months of unlimited audio/ebooks for free then $9.99/m. Another option: peep their deals of the day. I have downloaded MANY a classic from this. Cons: Unlimited is limited & also...Amazon

Option 4: Audible (1 book free, then $15/m)
Do you like audiobooks? Me too! Audible has a VAST library to choose from & has some exclusive ones you won’t find elsewhere. Cons: some audiobook genres can be hard to listen to vs physically reading, and again....Amazon

Option 5: @ThriftBooks ($, varies)
Prefer a physical book in hand? TB is for you. This is my FAVORITE online book store. They sell secondhand books for so cheap they’re practically giving them away. I got 7 books for $35! Cons: newest bestsellers usually full price

Option 6: buy from your local bookstore (varies, $$$)
PLS do not buy from Amazon if you can help it. Support your local bookstore! I just bought a mystery bag of books from @chbooksdc & I am STOKED. They’re shipping free rn if you want to buy from them!

How do you find books to read?
1. Ask your friends!
2. Goodreads (my fav)
3. Peruse book lists (I like @BuzzFeedBooks the most) & save what books strike your fancy
4. Find other books written from authors you already know you like
You’ll find your groove eventually!

Things to remember:
Best-seller lists don’t always means the book is “better” & they often leave out marginalized authors and indie/self-published authors.
You are allowed to stop reading a book if it’s not for you. In fact, you are allowed to not like reading!

Goodreads reviews are an excellent way to vet a book before you pick it up. I rely heavily on this.
There is no right or wrong way to read books. You are not better for reading nonfiction over fiction or for liking hardcovers over ebooks. Read what you like, when you want!
