As I've gotten a few sales these past few days (Thank you so much!) I figured it'd be good to post a little candle safety reminder thread! These tips apply to all candles in general, but specifically my candles as well. Thanks y'all!
🕯️Tips below!🕯️
Bear in mind, I'm no expert, these are just things I've learned along the way making my candles and enjoying candles in general. Some of these I learned the hard way, some I was lucky enough to read up on beforehand. Okay, here we go!
1. Trim your wicks! You should trim your wicks to 1/8" after around 4 hours of burn time. This not only helps your candle last longer, but it also helps prevent soot buildup around your glass, & keeps your candle looking nice & clean. Plus there are some gorgeous wick trimmers -
1a. And it's nice to flex your fancy wick trimmers 😉 Wick trimmers also let you reach into candles easier but regular scissors also work to trim your wicks. I recommend wick trimmers that have the ability to catch your excess wick so it doesn't fall back into your candle.
2. Burn time is very important with any candle, but with my shot candles especially. With a regular candle you can usually burn for around an hour or two with no problems. However, with my glasses, and any candles made from non-candle specific containers, it is key that you -
Do NOT burn for longer than an hour. In my case, I know from experience that burning a candle in a shot glass for longer than an hour can cause your glass to crack and potentially break. An hour or under is fine on these glasses, but I would recommend 45 minutes on shot candles.
2b. Also, do NOT burn shot candles right next to larger candles. The excess heat given off from the bigger candle can cause the shot to shatter. A dear friend of mine had this happen to them and it was not fun. By keeping an eye on how long you burn your candles for, you will -
2c. Help prevent any damage to your candle, ensure cleaner burns, and give you a good reminder of when to trim your wicks. I help myself remember how long I've been burning a candle by doing a specific activity while the candle is lit (yoga, a bath, etc) that I can time.
3. Keep your candles out of the sun! If you keep your candles in a place that gets lots of sun during the day, that can cause your candles to melt, discolor, and in the case of my thrifted glasses, potentially fade the design on the glass. Keep candles in a cool, dry area instead
4. NEVER LEAVE A LIT CANDLE UNSUPERVISED!! I cannot stress this one enough, it's so important. It seems like a really obvious tip, but it is imperative for the safety of yourself, your home, and any pets you may have. Unsupervised candles are a fire hazard that can become a big -
4a. Problem really fast. Not only can a tipped candle start a fire, but if melted wax gets on your carpet or floor, that can serve as fuel for the fire to spread. Also, if that candle shatters when it falls, it adds broken glass into the mix of an already dangerous margarita. -
4b. So make sure you always can see the candle you are burning! Especially with smaller candles, like my shot glasses, there is a higher risk of them getting knocked over, especially by children or pets. It only takes a second for a disaster to happen, & a second to prevent one
Well that's all I've got for now, but I'll add to this thread as I learn more or remember something I forgot. Stay safe and enjoy your candles! 🕯️🥃💗
