Dear Keir,
I didn’t vote in the leadership election, I wouldn’t vote for you, but was torn between the need for an ‘electable’ leader and the very real need for the credible policies of a party that genuinely fights for the needs of the many over the few. My dad and I have 1/
Argued repeatedly; he sees a need for an electable leader who takes more of the electorate with him, whilst I dread appeasement policies from such a leader that don’t reach far enough in dealing with the disadvantages for the many not the few. I teach and I am sick of being 2/
held responsible for the impact of disadvantage whilst holding none of the tools parliament has to actually deal with it. Education is a sticking plaster for a gaping wound.
After wooing the right wing press and somehow changing the issues with proportional representation, 3/
You are going to have to win that argument for the ideal of putting the rights of the many ahead of the rights of the few. Labour needs to grow belief and commitment to creating a country which is fair for all. We believe in the NHS & free education, surely the next steps are 4/
Credible too. I loved Corbyn’s idealism, his passionate zeal for a country that operated with different ideals. I found his vision compelling. I’m terrified of a Labour that becomes all shiny and new but lacks substanc of ideals and passion. I don’t want New 5/
Labour #2. But equally can’t imagine education surviving many more years of Tory policies... nor the NHS. The fabric of society was fraying well before Corona. The last 2 years were by far the hardest in my teaching career which started in 1998. I didn’t vote 6/
For you, Kier, but I am desperate for you to make this work. For you to knit together the talents of all those fabulous women who stood against you and with you to make a stunning opposition and win the next GE... after the last few weeks we really need it. You need to 7/
Give us a way forward, the light out of darkness. Be pragmatic and be electable, but GET THE POLICIES RIGHT, connected to ideals and set about winning the argument that EVERYONE MATTERS in a modern civilised society. Fight for what we need; equity & parity, not 8/
dull ambition and greed. We need a society that works for everyone, that doesn’t pit us against each other, that defeats the ambition and greed of the 1% with fair, sensible and human policies which see everyone right. All the best, Bec 9/9
PS You have to win the heartlands back and you are far too southern... Angela and Rebecca are key here.
