The last 48 hours have been very challenging for me & my family. My D put in isolation, distressed.
However, by far the most worrying of comments made to me by Ardenleigh staff about my D's status, " this is her permanent residence at the moment" & "this is your D's home"
1/
It wasnt said with any malice at all but what such comments illustrated is that patients in MH hospitals are so seperated, isolated from their families, communities, friends, school, work, outside world that any concept that they belong to any of these groups is lost. 2/
Being lost or isolated from these groups results in the MH recovery and social inclusion of the patient being a very lonely and challenging journey. Being discharged to home may never be realised and instead becoming institutionalised moving from one setting to another on 3/
a diet of drugs that are responsible for long term health problems and in some cases shorten life expectancy.
My journey as a mum to a beautuful daughter who was cruelly taken and kept from me by a profession that has continually tried, but failed, to bring me to my knees 4/
is an experience that I would not wish on my worst enemy.
This journey has made me more determined than ever before to bring about effective change to MH inpatient services, my ultimate goal being to close them completely instead having a network of community led support, 5/
safe spaces, respite short stay accommodation for people experiencing emotional distress, thus maintaining the social inclusion community ties whilst in recovery.
With these changes we must have accountability for the harm and abuse inflicted on our children and/or loved ones 6/
we should never believe or accept that a due process of accountability is only for some and not others, it is there even if we have to fight for it.
I will be seeking answers from Ardenleigh, I deserve to know why some staff are allowed to knowingly abuse patients, I want 7/
to know how the psychiatrist sectioned my daughter without consulting with me the Nearest Relative, why the Chief Executive believes she can breach data protection law and not be held accountable. These are just the tip of the iceberg of a service in crisis, that needs to 8/
be flushed out, closed down and never allowed to open up again.
My daughter will be discharged from Ardenleigh soon, not to home. As a mum I have had to come to terms with this, her siblings and extended family have too.
Supported living. When a profession harm a child 9/
to the point that she requires a supported living setting we should, as a society, demand to know what the hell have they done, what horrors have they inflicted on the body and mind that has resulted in a young woman, my daughter, requiring 24/7 supported accommodation. 10/
Reprisals are real at Ardenleigh and for that reason accountability will start the day my daughter is discharged from there.
Recorded telephone conversations, my diary, letters, CQC, NHSEngland, individual abusive staff, barbaric practices I will bring into my accountability 11/
framework. The inpatient mental health profession is on its knees, it cannot be allowed to get up ever again.
I know I am not alone, there are many with similar stories. I stand in solidarity with you ✊ together we will achieve change together we will get accountability 12/END
