@govevers @repvos Wisconsin's election on Tues is about more than Presidential nominations. We hold over 3,900 state, county, school and municipal elections next week. Critically important in our democracy that citizens choose their representatives especially during a crisis. 1/7
In 1814 the British army invaded Washington DC forcing Madison and his government to evacuate as the city and the White House burned. Elections continued across the United States. 2/7
Elections continued during the Civil War. During the 1918 Influenza pandemic elections continued. It is extremely important to maintain continuity of government, along with normal transitions of power, during times of fear or controversy. 3/7
Turnout for April election in WI ranges from a low of 1.1M as high as 2.1M, average 1.6M. We have mailed 1.3 million absentee ballots already. In-person voting is available Tuesday but this election is likely to be close to 80% by mail, all under our existing election laws. 4/7
This is an impressive response and adjustment to pandemic by our voters. Switching our election from 80% in-person to 80% by-mail in a few weeks demonstrates the flexible and adaptable nature of Wisconsin's voting laws. 5/7
Wisconsin requires photo ID & a witness for absentee ballots. We allow no-excuse absentee voting, in-person absentee early voting, on-line registration & election day registration. Our voters have responded to a crisis with a "can-do" attitude. 6/7
Everything is in place for our elections to go forward. Don't let fear and panic derail our democracy. Instead let's pull together to help ensure we minimize health risks in polling places while protecting the integrity of our elections. 7/7
