The willingness for Some evangelical Christians to lay aside moral decency and common courtesy towards addressing their political opponents and characterize any appeal to such as leftist PC culture or virtue signaling is moral relativism.
It is the willingness for those Christians to lay asside all biblical command regarding the tongue, speech, love, respect, etc in order to WIN. As long as this shames the libs then it’s okay. It’s laying aside morals for cultural warfare.
It is deciding that in order to win in this political landscape that it’s okay to forgo decency, courtesy and respect because those are all virtues of a leftist politically correct strategy so we will do the exact opposite and claim that it’s just “hard truth.”
“Facts don’t care about your feelings” was born out of this idea. The idea that compassion, decency in respect is at odds with truth because “leftist” have made it so. So the way forward is to be as compassionless and hard-nosed as possible in rhetoric to stand against PC culture
Evangelical and conservative @BenHowe calls this the “new rules” of the “new right.” And in order for it to work “one must believe morality is relative to the situation.” Becuase the stakes are too high to be worried about “decency.” But the Christian cannot accept that.
For the Christian this is at odds with a biblical worldview. But for the Christian whose political tribe color his theology rather than the other way around, this may seem totally fine. The issue is if this does seem totally fine then your politics and party is your God/religion
Your “Christianity” then is no more than another aspect of the party line that you must toe. Your real goal is your political tribe’s goals. Your Christianity is just a mascot for it.
In this worldview, God’s mission for his kingdom is the same mission as your political party and everyone on the left is = to satan and his mission. This is a very dangerous view to have. It conflates kingdom agenda with the agenda of party. It’s also very narrow.
The types of political slurs, snarky comments, name-calling and disrespect I’ve seen evangelical Christians deploy against their political opponents transgress all God says in His Word re speech, love and respect. But it doesn’t transgress their tribe’s rules.
If the tribe does it then it’s ok. Why? This is what we do. It’s what all of us are doing. We’re all calling those who talk about decency & respect “snowflakes” and mocking the notion of it. We are all calling libs dumb, soft etc. we all mock our opponents and provoke on purpose
At that point it’s not Christ and His Word that is determining your morals, actions and behavior but your tribe. You’re following the heard and anyone that questions them or believes something they don’t is now an enemy.
This is a good indication of one who, despite what they say about their Christianity, has chosen political tribe/party over Christ. They have just been very good as justifying why that isn’t the case. But as we know, actions speak louder than words.
Evangelicals are tired of losing and being taunted. In response, they have adopted a win by any means necessary approach. This is scary because it’s very Machiavellian and transgresses much of what they claim to believe Jesus said concerning our behavior and what we stand for.
