Calling someone “they” when you don’t know the persons’ pronouns isn’t misgendering because they/them is gender neutral. However insisting on using “they” when you DO know the persons’ pronouns aren’t they/them IS misgendering.
Clearly some things up:

Is it technically still misgendering when you use the wrong pronouns even without knowing if you’re using the wrong ones? Yes and I think it’s valid if it bothers you. What I mean is it’s not the same as intentionally misgendering and ignoring someone’s
identity completely when you know better.
Also they/them are not the “non binary pronouns.” Non binary people, just like anyone else, can use whatever pronouns they feel most comfortable going by. What I meant when I called they/them gender neutral is that you can use them for
anyone and have it still makes sense in a sentence. “They” has been used as singular pronouns since the beginning of the English language.

People are pointing out exceptions to my original tweet but I just meant this as a general rule. It’s not set in stone forever and ever.
