Pleased to switch on my phone and find some good news amongst the bad for a change - @Keir_Starmer has been elected Labour leader. Of all candidates I think he has best chance of taking Labour forward and repairing significant damage done by his predecessor. Best of luck to him
He has a massive task ahead, though hopefully some of the people who have been so central to the problems with Labour will leave before they are pushed. I think a lot will be accomplished by just having a leader and leader’s team who aren’t on the far left of the party.
On antisemitism, Keir will need to spend time and effort. No easy or quick solutions. Involves (1) rebuilding trust which can only be done by relationship (re)building, (2) taking tough decisions like sacking staff who have been roadblocks, (3) totally disassociating...
... with and disowning orgs like Jewish Voice for Labour/Canary/Squawkbox who have played such a shameful role in the culture of denial - has to be public, no pussyfooting, (4) introducing an independent disciplinary process, (5) calling out Corbyn himself for his own role...
...Mirror @SadiqKhan’s example of reaching out to Jewish communities, visit synagogues when they reopen, holocaust memorials... can’t rely on fact he is Not-Corbyn. Will be a long road but he is strategic. Whether he has strength to disassociate from key perpetrators I don’t know
... Of course he should accept any recommendations made by the Equality and Human Rights Commission but he shouldn’t wait. He will be well aware of what needs to be done and he should get on with the task now. Own it, not be reactive.
