The Trump presidency and COVID-19 are similar in that 1) in the beginning, we were all told it was going to be okay - that Trump and the virus weren't an existential threat to our way of life.

2) When the experts started to sound the alarm and provide facts about the threat, we were told it was all a hoax.

3) When it all started crumbling down, it became obvious that our government actively prevented us from taking steps to contain or eliminate the threat.
