“Hi.”
Osamu turned to Atsumu, who sat next to him. He looked back at the empty street, trying to swallow back the feeling of discomfort that climbed up from his stomach to his throat.
“Hi.“
“Mom saved food for you. Says you gotta gather energy, for practice tomorrow.”
“Not hungry.”
“‘Am just sayin’. You know how she gets.”
“Yeah. I guess that’s why you’re here.”
“I wanted to talk to ya’ anyway. I missed you.”
Osamu wished his twin would go straight to the point. He took a deep breath, bracing himself for the inevitable crushing words.
Probably would he tell him that he loved him, but that that wasn’t something he could deal with. Osamu wouldn’t get it, but he would accept it, because he’s his twin brother in spite of everything, he couldn’t bear losing him.
He couldn’t stop thinking about that night. The memory of Atsumu’s smile fading that night and his miserable attempts at saying something, anything was rooted into his mind. He hadn’t been able to get proper rest all week, the disappointment eating him day and night.
“You know...” Atsumu looked up at the starry sky, his breathing shaky. “How I reacted....”
Osamu squeezed his eyes shut. There it was. It was rare for his brother to not be rude while expressing his disgust, but in that case, he wished he would break him all at once, in one shot.
“Yeah, I know. Let’s ignore it. I won’t bother you with... this shit.” Atsumu clicked his tongue in annoyance.
“Just listen to me, will ya’?” He shifted beside Osamu, uneasiness making itself obvious in his posture.
“I- I am fine with you being gay. I am sorry if I reacted weirdly.”
And reacted weirdly he did. It happened because of some slip up, the night he came from his training camp in Tokyo, Osamu asked Atsumu how he thought Rintarou would react if he asked him out.
He had been thinking about it for weeks, and he had missed his brother, missed his annoying behaviour as much as he missed his support.
Excluding his surprised exclamation, he’d stayed very quiet, and excused himself out of the room.
Osamu took the hint. When Atsumu came back, he didn’t mention it again and went to bed directly, leaving a hole in his brother’s heart.
The week that followed, they didn’t talk more than they were required to. Atsumu made things awkward, or maybe was it Osamu?
Hell, he couldn’t even tell Rintarou about it, he couldn’t risk to weird him out too. As bothersome Atsumu was, he needed him. He felt even more lonely now than he did when his twin was physically away.
A soft chuckle brought him back to reality.
“I just- I needed time. Y’know, when you spend quite a while wondering how your family, especially your other half, will react if you tell them that you may have some feelings for boys only to find out that said half does...”
Osamu’s eyes widened. Was Atsumu... coming out?
“Oh.”
“Yeah. Oh.”
“Ya like someone, Tsumu?”
“Mhm. Maybe.”
The smile on his face wasn’t smug, and Osamu hated how it softened the features of his face.
“Who’s that?”
“Sakusa Kiyoomi.”
He waited a few seconds to make sure his brother wasn’t serious. He was completely serious.
“Hey! Why are you laughing?!”
“Sakusa Kiyoomi-?! He’s way out of yer league!”
“What-?! No!“
“Yes! What did ya think- a top ace?!”
“Do ya really think I don’t stand a chance?!”
Osamu decided to calm down before answering.
It shouldn’t be that funny, he probably needed to let out the pent-up stress that’s been eating at him the whole week.
“Nah. Y’can always try.”
“Jeez. Talk about faith...”
“You can always try to be yourself. You’ll annoy him so much he’ll have to give in.”
He smiled when he received a punch in the shoulder. He didn’t know whatever Sakusa Kiyoomi dis at the training camp, but whatever it was, Atsumu looked absolutely smitten. Gross. A comfortable silence this time, but he decided to break it anyway.
“So... Are you gonna tell him?”
“No. But you should.”
“Uh?”
“Oh come on, I see the way Sunarin and you look at each other, you should confess already.”
“I think he may be out of my league too.”
Atsumu rested his head on Osamu’s shoulder, staring at the dark empty street and used a low tone.
“No. We’re the Miya twins. We are out of everyone’s league.”
For once, he couldn’t bring himself to call him out on his arrogance. So, he simply leaned back against him and brought his hand up to pet his awful hair that he missed so much.
