If these shutdowns weren’t necessary or are counterproductive, the government officials responsible will have made one of the worst and most costly blunders in American history. No bureaucrat or politician wants to cop to such a thing which means they have a huge incentive to lie

The point is that our government is taking us down an unprecedented and destructive path, and even if they discover that it was the wrong path, there is no way in hell they will ever admit it. So there is a crisis of trust to go a long with the other crises. Powder keg situation

It would take an immense amount of moral courage for someone to stand in front of the nation and say “This was the wrong approach. We may have destroyed all of your lives for no good reason.” Who in government do you trust to say that?
