People are rightly shocked and horrified by the casual racism & violence towards Africans on display in France, where it was suggested the risk of new coronavirus treatment could be dealt with by experimenting on Africans. That within living memory, the French were dropping atomic bombs in the middle of the African continent more than 3x as powerful as Nagasaki, poisoning millions of Africans to still unknown effect...
That the medical profession still reveres doctors like gynaecologist James Marion Sims, who experimented on black women, performing surgery without anaesthetic...
And that to this day, pharmaceutical companies conduct up to 40% of all clinical trials in developing countries, including many African countries, to take advantage of what they regard as medically illiterate populations, weak regulation, & participants’ lack of access to justice
This is why we fight colonialism every single day. Because it is still real and it is still killing people, just as African independence leaders warned it would, more than 70 years ago
