I wanna talk about why MCU Thanos is a bastardization of one of Marvel's best villains and why you probably should read some comics with him involved because dear god he's great. From Mad Titan to cardboard cutout, heres a thread no one asked for!
Motivation is really the number one problem between the two and this ripples out into their personality greatly. Thanos in the MCU is scary because of his dedication to a cause. This can be effective but it's not very interesting or new, especially when the cause "Balance"
Thanos in the comics also has a dedication but it's to love. Now stick with me here, everyone knows that love can make you do crazy shit. There is a character in Marvel named "Lady Death" she is, as you would expect, the embodiment of death in the Marvel universe.
Thanos happens to be madly in love with Death. Like obsessive to the point of psychopathy. How do you impress Lady Death? Well by murdering billions of people on any and every planet you can find. A blind passion if trying to get this woman resulting in GENOCIDAL TENDENCIES.
Thanos in the comics is an insane tyrant who wants one thing and will stop at nothing, no matter how irrational, to get what he wants. This creates a more dynamic and interesting villain where MCU Thanos is cold and calculating, comicbook Thanos is a zealot of love and death.
A perfect example of why he's dynamic is Deadpool. Why is that name here? Well you know how I said Thanos is in love with Death? This is not reciprocated as Death is bored of death. She kinda sees it everywhere and is in charge of EVERY dead soul. Deadpool cant die.
Deadpool's soul cant pass over because the dude never dies for that to happen. As a result of Lady Death not being able to have this soul, SHE FALLS IN LOVE WITH DEADPOOL. Straight up, she wants the D Piddy, ya dig? This results in Thanos hating Deadpool and wanting him dead...
...which cant happen. That's one example of how Thanos' motivation in the comics creates more potential in story telling other than "Shit ain't balanced bro, nuke half the universe" this motivation has also lead to things like Thanos pairing up with Hel (one of my favorites)
And in general it also makes him much scarier. He cant acquire this love from her but he doesnt care and at this point, hes in too deep to stop. In short, MCU Thanos would be an interesting villain to me...if he wasnt Thanos. I wanted that psychopathic death tyrant and
Instead I got...all this. Hope you enjoyed this read, go read Cosmic Ghost Rider or some shit (this has little to nothing to do with this thread other than Thanos is in it) idk comics rock. Pick what you want. Comic Thanos>>>MCU Thanos FREE.
