People who are complaining (and shaming) #EvgeniaMedvedeva because she went to Japan in times of #COVID19 , and asking "why has she accepted to go?"
The Ice Rinks in Canada and Russia are closed. The Ice Rinks in Japan are still (mostly) open.
You do the math.

In the last weeks I have seen #figureskating people struggling to find places to practice. Tom Zakrajsek found a private rink (smaller than my living room) to take his students. Chock & Bates and Keegan Messing were practicing in the backyard of their homes
Roman Sadovsky made a sort of "pilgrimage" chasing still open rinks to practice: the Canadian ones closed, he went to USA, if the rink where he was closed he moved for another...Many USA skaters did the same, btw.
So, is no surprise that #Medvedeva has went to Japan now.

As far as I knew from Japanese sources, the life goes without big interruptions and that includes many Ice Rinks. Is a reckless posture of the Abe Government (reminds me of the Brazilian Government that says "is just a small flu") and probably that will bite them back. However...
...under the point of view of athletes, that means a place to practice. And—is sad to say,but is the way things work—a strategic advantage in the current game.
Speaking only on #Medvedeva , at this moment other Russian #figureskaters can& #39;t practice due to rinks closure in Russia

That include Shcherbakova, Kostornaia, Trusova and Valieva. They ruled the world on last season, they have 3A or quad jumps...and they are now bounded home, growing taller, without practices. A situation similar to the one faced by Gogolev last season (and we know how that ended)
#Medvedeva—and all the other good female skaters that had no quads or 3A—are probably seeing this as the chance of practice and balance the game again in their favor. So, many probably are going/thinking in how to go to places where the rinks are open. As Japan, apparently.
Not everyone can go to Japan now (some countries closed borders to exits and entrances). More: there& #39;s info about a possible closure of Japanese borders in the next days (no info on the rinks, however: some of the ones that were closed said about re-opening in the next days)
So that probably explains why #Medvedeva went to Japan now: rinks are open, her business agreements allow her to travel and stay there with some support, and if the border went closed, she will be already there, so if the rinks stay open, she can practice. Is a strategic move.
Is risky and can backfire badly, as viruses don& #39;t care about who and where? Sure it is. But is not the first and would not be the last athlete doing risky stuff to keep their game running. That is—under real possibilities—way more often than not. No pain, no risk, no gain
As example, many boxers use to do insane stuff to keep in the lower weight categories (in a process very similar of drying tomatoes, but with their own bodies. Is a very risky thing to do, that can kill or lead to permanent heart and kidney damage). Boxers are not the only ones
Recently, RBR director Helmut Marko suggested his motor racing drivers should get #COVID19 in order to get "recovered, then free of the disease for good", so they could practice without concerns after that. Is a nearly criminal statement tbh, but is regarded as SPORT STRATEGY.
And so it goes.
On a note, is not official that #Medvedeva went to Japan to try keep practicing. She said it was to honor the agreements of a #figureskating show. A show is months ahead if I can remember. Ok.
But is difficult not to think in the strategic possibility involved
