Wesley Sneijder was promptly named was promptly named the UEFA midfielder of the year. Testament to his his consistency and effectiveness during the 13/14 campaign. His individual performances carried an Inter Milan side to an eternally desired treble.
Sneijder’s exploits didn’t stop there as he guided Netherlands to a World Cup final in world beating form. At the suprise of many, Sneijder played mainstray in an above average Netherlands side which eventually lost the final.
This was also the first year since FIFA combined the FF Ballon d’Or award with the FIFA World Player of the year award. Amidst this there was the requisite amount of outrage and controversy closely associated with FIFA.
JOURNALIST VOTES:

1. Sneijder (293 points)
2. Iniesta (226 points)
3. Xavi (229 points)

Messi didn’t make top 3 in journalist votes.
Wesley Sneijder didn't put a step wrong in that year & was extremely my unfortunate not to claim the individual award. Contrary to this Messis Argentina was completely outclassed by Schweinsteiger & co in the World Cip Quarter Finals.
Not to mention Iniesta & Xavi we’re also knocked out by Inter Milan In the UCL semis. Though this was compensated for through Spains World Cup triumph.

*If an arguement is to be made it had to be for Iniesta who’s season was almost as influential.
Take nothing away from Messi’s individual season but even the footballing genius in Xavi Hernandez openly refuted the Dutchman’s snub in the Ballon d’Or’s top 3. A criminally under appreciated individual season swept under the carpet.
For the first time in history a player had won the award having not won the World Cup in the tournament year. For the first time had a player from a treble wining side missed out on such a prize. Sneijder’s possession had been unjustly taken away from him.
