I, who have never seen any Star Wars films except The Phantom Menace (when I was 12!), have signed up to Disney+ and have decided to watch the original trilogy from the start. To amuse myself, I will post my thoughts on each film after I've watched it.
As a benchmark, ALL the things I currently know about Star Wars are:
- Darth Vader (villain) is Luke Skywalker's dad
- LS is a Jedi & is mentored by Obi-Wan Kenobi
- Someone says 'these aren't the droids you're looking for'
- There is blue milk
- Princess Leia is in it, also R2D2
Right. Ep IV is go. I will report later!
Overall verdict: genuinely, MUCH better than I had expected. Impressed by the way both the world and characters feel so rooted in backstory, & yet it doesn't overwhelm and confuse the narrative.
Random thoughts:
- CP30 and R2D2's arc/relationship was my favourite thing about the film. So funny!
- Without context (I don't know anything!), Princess Leia allowing the destruction of her whole planet to protect the rebel base felt pretty morally horrific.
- a lot of the opening of Toy Story 2 now makes much more sense!
- I was pleased to see blue milk make an appearance
- this feels pretty self contained. I wouldn't necessarily have expected a sequel.
I haven't watched any more of the trilogy yet (if anyone was expecting a marathon, I have a v short attention span) but I had some thoughts on the three central characters after having only watched episode IV:
Luke: irritating & fluffy!
Leia: feels like a secondary character in this movie, no emotional follow-up on her ENTIRE planet being blown up, which makes her feel cold
Han Solo: definitely the most fun, also enjoy how Harrison Ford is always caught in gradually closing spaces
Right, Ep.V is go!
My belated thoughts on Ep. V. Overall, this is probably heresy, but I liked Ep. IV slightly more. This film obviously has a lot of iconic moments, but there were also more action sequences, and I preferred the slower/funnier feel of IV. Still, it was very good!
To start with the important stuff, I am still loving R2D2 and C3P0, even if they were a bit less funny in this film. I have decided that C3P0 is the Percy Weasley of Star Wars - adorably pedantic and horribly mistreated by everybody around him. I ❤️ them both.
I adored Han and Leia's adventures (giant space worm!!!), but I didn't like the Yoda training arc at all. Yoda's planet reminds me of one of the interim sets on the Crystal Maze. I also found him weirdly hard to understand (not his syntax, but the diction) which was annoying.
Finally, I still feel like Leia is being sidelined - she's shown as competent, but her skills don't contribute directly to the plot, unlike Luke's and Han's. Still, I'm v excited for Ep. VI!
Ep VI is go!
Ooh, I loved that one! Possibly my favourite of the first three? I appreciated how it was both funny and serious, and really liked the unexpected resolution with DV.
After hating Luke in the first film, I'm much more on board with this evangelical slightly creepy Frodo-esque incarnation, although his hair is worse again after its high point in the Yoda training bit in film VI.
*film V obviously. And I know the ewoks are controversial, but I liked them as well. (I prefer silly action sequences to serious action sequences).
So here ends this thread. Though I'm definitely keen to try some of the newer films as well (not I, II or III tho. Even though two of my uncles have said I have to watch the set).
