This #Rivalry123 game in 1987 would be the last at historic Taylor Stadium.
Hall-of fame Delaware coach Tubby Raymond hated the place. "I hate walking up the three flights of stairs to the locker room. On the sideline, the line judge ran over me three times because there's just no room there..."
Tubby Raymond: "The fans are sitting on your back, in your head and everybody's screaming. They can hear everything you're saying; it's kind of like being naked. "
Even though Lehigh students loved the home-field advantage it created, by 1987 it was clearly time to say goodbye. The "seats" were slabs of wood nailed to concrete. The bricks used to build the place were more than 50 years old. It was a rough experience for the uninitiated.
Plans had been announced already that a badly-needed business building, Rauch Business center, was to be build, and ultra-modern Murray Goodman Stadium was to be build on the other side of campus on land that was donated by Bethlehem Steel, past Mountaintop Campus.
As a result, those attending this sellout game were wary of what would happen postgame. "The Marching 97 decided they were leaving early because people might steal the band instruments or uniforms," one member shared with me.
