Trying to stay forced on solutions instead of what caused the problems (although I am quite aware of those as well.)

A few thoughts on what we need now, what we should be doing to eventually reopen economy and how vital it is we share and learn instead of isolated from ROW.
The focus should first be on fighting spread and understanding virus. I am not an epidemiologist. I trust their research - we need to integrate but not second guess scientists doing the best they can to catch a moving target.
Clearly need PPE, ventilators and more efficient and effective testing to deal w health crisis of #COVID19. States, hospitals and the federal gov’t competing w each other not productive. Further erosion trade w countries that can supply us is counterproductive (understatement.)
Admin exploring 90-day tariff suspension to ease supply chain bottlenecks. A u-turn better. Can’t fix under supply that fast.

Need to dramatically boost production of a broad spectrum of supplies to sanitize and protect us all from infecting each other.
Rushing FDA approval of tests and drugs has consequences - compromises quality. How do we more rapidly adopt tests that work better in other countries? Is there a way to better delineate quality and efficacy of tests in the pipeline? Who will pay for the tests? Phase 4?
Same argument goes for clinical trials for treatment - NY taking lead. Need time to make sure ab efficacy and side effects - need to toolkit reopen w/o a vaccine. Being able to better test, isolate, and manage the disease will be a fact of life for a year or longer.
We are going to need a lot more PPE for everyday life and tests that work effectively to identify virus, antibodies to disease and antibodies. We need to know whether we *might* be immune to disease. Italy way ahead of us on this. They have a lot more data.
Need studies on how disease discriminates and infects. Thank Germany in advance for leading this charge. Much less discriminating than early (bad) data suggested. Young adults more vulnerable than previously thought. Young survived bc ventilators had to be rationed in Italy. 😱
Need to not only provide aid to stem spread of disease by covering costs of protective gear. Will need protocols and funding to make returning to work and public places less contagious. The logistics of this are large. Also need protocols on how to quarantine and trace infected.
There are apps that aggregate data and preserve some level of privacy. What are considered best practices may not be same as what is *acceptable* in a democracy. Need to deal w this now, w all other balls still in air. So we know where we are going.
Need to think about what the triggers to reopening will be - what is critical mass of testing need after virus crests. Is two weeks after virus crests enough if we don’t have protective gear and protocols in place - seems a no from what epidemiologists are saying. Need policies.
Need to delineate between aid to bridge covid-tainted waters, aid and protocols to reopen with lower risk of infection w/o vaccine, aid to keep workers and biz and states afloat while reopen and stimulus designed to effectively stimulate an economy still struggling w containment.
A separate set of stimulus for economy as world ramps up. Hard to imagine how uneven process will be by country, region, and county. We have an advantage in that we know we want to reopen before we have a vaccine. That gives us the clarity vision needed to better design stimulus
Ideally we coordinate efforts w other countries - I have my doubts about how far we get on this front. My friends who more closely monitor geopolitics note a void that was left by US and how it is being filled, notably by China.
Not too early to be pooling ideas of what would work. Worst mistake would be to offer up old solitons to old problems and not acknowledge the world has changed. This is where we have a chance to get ahead instead of behind the curve of this devastaing disease.
Disease has laid bare how riddled with holes our safety net is in this country. (I know - we knew/did little - but this ab solutions.) Healthcare already top of list of concerns prior to COVID19 for 2020 elections. Need soln’s that go beyond soundbites. What is really doable?
This is how I think. You don’t have to agree or disagree - just a prelude of the complexities we face. Humans are adaptable and remarkably resilient - that is what gives me hope. Works best when we think before we act. Ok. That is an opinion.
