join me on my journey to go back home to egypt from New York. repatriation flight and quarantine, here I come.
step 1: post a message on my building’s facebook group asking if anyone had masks to spare. a kind neighbor put some in a baggie and taped them to her door.
step 2: walk 15 mins to pick up a car rental. nervously wipe the interior down with some wipes. drive 4 hours to DC. Thanks @jjmccorvey for your precious Purell.
step 3: drop off car, shuttle to @Dulles_Airport airport and marvel at the quiet. Never have I ever seen it so empty.
step 4: finally put on my first mask. I’m been at home for 24 days and it’s surreal how quickly we adjust: being around people now feels weird. and they’re all wayyyy too close.
step 5: sign doc saying I agree to quarantine wherever the government decides to put us. No number of days stated- but people on previous flights say 14 for everyone, 28 if you test positive.
to note: the flight to Cairo was changed to Marsa Alam- a tourist town on the Red Sea.

step 6: get through security. TSA surprisingly chill. Not too good on the social distancing. Super close. None of them wearing masks, just gloves. And I still got my hijab patted down (of course).
