A local education non-profit is urging the governor to rethink long-term distance learning guidelines especially in regards to grades. At this point, grades will be less about comprehension of material and more about ranking the home lives of students.
This pandemic is only going to further illuminate and widen the inequality already present. And I want to scream that children will bear much of the brunt of this pain.
Our school systems have always been inequitable, for example. But schools with low test scores often became hubs for community, resilience building, and a place to help create small safety nets for families. All of this relied on in person communication and stability.
When all of this is over, please let us not participate in these systems of resource hoarding and segregation. Please let us recognize that all of these kids belong to us. And right now, and for the foreseeable future, they are going to suffer greatly.
