Also, Jeff is donating $100,000,000 to one non-profit. This isn’t a dig against his donation but heavy checks from the wealthy to a single point creates public-private nightmares that usually help no one (see: Oprah & Zuckerberg’s $100,000,000 donation to Newark public schools)
The lofty amounts usually come with no type of oversight or accountability. The chosen non-profit usually takes the money and creates an offshoot “foundation”, that spends a lot of time and money staffing headquarters and raising more money.
Rarely does the money ever meet the need. Each state has an established food bank, along with what I imagine dozens and dozens of private food banks. This move is his equivalent of “here, stop begging. At least I did something.”
Those three pieces I linked admittedly are long (especially the NPR piece. But it’s soooooooo good). But they really dig into these “parachute gifts” as they are known.
And I don’t wanna be the loud and wrong math guy here and have my tweet wind up on MSNBC being read by Brian Williams😂😂😂 But if Jeff donated $100,000,000 to every single state’s established food bank, that would be $5,000,000,000 (5 billion dollars). A much better route and he
would barely put a dent in his net worth. They know the right things to do. Greed just stops them from doing the right thing.
