Met Kevin Keegan twice. Once when he visited Bahrain, where I lived as a child. We had a kick around and I megged him. Second time, when his family used to frequent the pub on the North York Moors where I worked.

Met Robert Plant at a breakfast buffet in Brno. We had a brief chat about the economics of touring in Central and Eastern Europe, and he apologised for name dropping after saying “well, actually I was talking with Bono about this just the other day”.

Met Lech Wałęsa briefly at a book signing in Warsaw. He was even more irascible than usual.

Met Prince Charles when he was on an official visit to Bahrain. He told me off for nearly taking his eye out while waving a flag.

Met Germaine Greer when she was a professor at Warwick, where I did my undergraduate degree. Wasn’t taught by her, but we had a discussion in the lift about loganberries.

So that leaves Smokey Robinson. Believe me, if I had met Smokey Robinson you would know about it. It’d be in the bio.
