There is a pattern here. One that does not augur well for Kenyans. When the ministry makes such a declaration, it leaves other sectors with a very clear question: ARE WE NEXT??? A tiny thread. https://twitter.com/JerotichSeii/status/1246333957572120576
With the firing of CS Kiunjuri, the govt issued a directive to buy farmers milk at Kshs.33. This was after months long complaining of poor pricing, with some farmers selling their milk as low as 17/=. This was in January 2020.
There was also a pledge to buy farmers' rice at 85/=. This was following complains of poor pricing resulting in the sale of rice to middlemen at a paltry 45-65/= as the govt took either too long to pay it had an amount not agreed upon by the farmers.
Of importance to note, this measures and pledges were made in conjunction with BBI rallies. It may have appeared as the govt doing the right thing but was in fact a means to woo the masses to support the BBI. Put 2 and 2 together. Connect the dots.
Now,the govt comes out boldly saying it won't buy local maize. Is it that Kenyan farmers always want to hoard maize or is it that the govt can't give a fair price? And from the article, if we don't have enough maize, why don't we buy the local stock and add the deficit?
And by giving processors and private orgs the greenlight to import, how do you regulate market price? Only a fool would believe that the Price Control Act would be enforced to suit the common man when those importing are the same ones with the power to invoke it.
IMO, now that the BBI is no longer a thing, maize farmers are being told, plainly, sort yourselves out,you are no longer needed to drive govt agenda.
And it is very wrong that the govt can't support the local man without strings attached.
What will happen to the local maize?

What will happen to the local maize?
Will the imported maize be inspected for aflatoxins or do we await another exposé in 2021, detailing how much substandard maize we consumed?
What will make the local farmer plant maize come the next planting season, keep in mind, locusts, fertilizer, rotting stock, loans etc?

@PeterMunya there is equal room to revive the coffee sector and sustain the maize sector. Going from this article and common sense,if the maize sector that is alive and can't get proper support, then the same fate will fall on the still-being-revived coffee sector.
This is an uncertain period and there is need for the public to feel and see a trustworthy govt. Don't mess this up. Cause when it all ends, we shall revisit.
The local farmer that you so despise in your workings, is by the very definition of the word: ESSENTIAL to our survival.

And to all who think that this doesn't concern you:
1. The same doctors that were arrested and ridiculed in 2017 are now the most celebrated employees.
2. You have tried dealing with your child all day, don't you appreciate that teacher just a little more?
Farming saves lives!!!

And for the last part of this thread: Why do we have agriculture committee in both senate and parliament that seem quite unbothered by having the ministry go ahead without proper guidance?
Cause if they did,the ministry wouldn't be acting like a one man show as it is!!!!
