I am really flabbergasted to read the findings of this recent paper by @SGlaserSF et . al., titled “Foreign Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated Fishing in Somali Waters Perpetuates Conflict" the analysis of the paper indicated unprecedented fishing depletion in the Somali waters
They evaluated foreign fishing vessels operating in the EEZ of Somalia landed approx 2,521,318 mt of fish between 1981 and 2014. And compared at that time with fish population caught by the Somali fisheries and it is almost double (1,182,995 mt) of that illegal foreign fisheries
.....see the graphical comparison in figure 1. In figure 2 & 3 you can see some of the target species that illegal foreign vessels generally target, of Tuna fish is among the most targeted species....
So ,my take is, Although UN and other international communities have focused mainly on fighting the act of piracy in Somalia, they yet to recognize this ecosystem injustice of fishing depletion was the root cause of the Somali piracy, So, I am petrified this Illegal, unreported..
and unregulated (IUU) fishing depletion in the Somali waters will reverse the now declined piracy in Somalia. And yes Som Authorizes especially my state “Puntland” and the federal @fisheriesSOM are the ones giving the green light to those IUU fishing depletion in the som waters..
