I’m bored so today I’m going to have an in-depth thread explaining why a Danganronpa character could happen and why it should happen. I will also be showcasing evidence and explaining my reasoning.
Danganronpa is a Visual Novel series of games that have a dark concept however a somewhat lighter story and unique characters. This series is owned by Spike Chunsoft who have collaborated and worked on projects with Nintendo. They are also a Japanese based company.
Due to the pop art style and lighter story then the themes it presents I do think it’s able to get into Smash. Not only that, the Danganronpa games were cultural phenomenon in the 2010’s, with having a large fan base and a series of games, animes, merchandise, etc.
With Danganronpa having a large variety of characters, locations, and music. Making it be perfectly legible for a spot. With the inclusion of Danganronpa in Smash Ultimate. We will have the first character who originates from a Visual Novel game.
A Danganronpa character also has potential for a very unique moveset that could have new mechanics. Which Sakurai has stated is important when choosing DLC. There are numerous of characters to choose to represent Danganronpa. However, the 2 main candidates are Makoto & Monokuma.
Makoto is the main character of the 1st Danganronpa game. Even though he is a normal teenager in the original source material there is a moveset to pull from. The moveset would be based around the Class Trial that happen in the series. Probably making him a unique zoner.
Makoto also has the potential to represent the other mainline games in the series. He could be similar to Hero, by having other characters as alternate costumes. These characters most likely being Hajime, Kaede, and Shuichi the protagonist from the sequels.
Monokuma on the other hand also has a lot going for him. He is the mascot of the series. He shows up in every single game in the series without fail. There is also a lot of potential for his moveset. Possibly not only referencing the Class Trials but all of the games entirely.
Monokuma would be the better choice to represent Danganronpa as a “whole”. While Makoto would better represent the mainline games and the concept of the killing game that made the series popular.
Even though there hasn’t been a new game in the Danganronpa series since 2017. It’s still relevant and is still being talked about. Not only that, there have been hints from Spike Chunsoft there is going to be a 10 Year Anniversary project for Danganronpa.
Which would be perfect to coincide with not only potential Nintendo Switch ports for the past games in the series. But the inclusion of a character in Smash Ultimate. Some of the recent inclusions coincides with releases. For example: Joker, Hero, and Byleth.
Sakurai is also a big fan of Kodaka’s work and has most likely played all of the Danganronpa games, which may support their possibility. Sakurai being a fan of a game and the series may have impacted past choices. For example: Joker, Hero, and Terry.
With the large potential for the character, stage, music, and spirits. Danganronpa has all the requirements to not only make it in Smash, but also be a great inclusion. Hopefully this thread has made up your mine on Danganronpa X Smash Ultimate.
