I noticed something today on my eleventy-millionth Paddington rewatch that’s so Film School 101 I ought to have seen it so much earlier, but I’m excited to share as it concerns my favourite colour, red <spoilers>....

Red! The colour of danger! Love! Passion! Excitement! Paddington’s hat!

Mrs Brown is dressed head to toe in red when she first meets Paddington, and trusts him, and helps him... coat, shoes....

Jonathan is the next to melt to the bear’s charms. The red in his jacket indicates a Paddington-positive attitude. Soon enough, Judy has red detail in her school uniform (and it’s at school that her transformation occurs). But Mr Brown is all blues, greys & tie properly tied...

But see! Is that a cheeky flash of red on the neck detail of Mr Brown’s coat (and no tie!) in the scene at the Geographers’ Guild?...

...Moments later, this! Scarlet lipstick! Red floral embroidery! The pinks of the uniform!...

And then: the museum showdown. Look at Mr Brown now! How far he’s come! A red t-shirt under a red collared shirt, no tie in sight. A family united against Nicole Kidman...

At the very very end, as he and Jonathan light their rocket, Mr Brown is sporting quite the loveliest red woollen jersey I’ve ever seen. How far he has come from that first, ketchup-laden meeting with Paddington.
