Earlier this year, hankering for some good films to watch but having 2 young kids so unable to go to the cinema, I decided to do the classic task: watch each @TheAcademy award for best picture winner. Starting from 1970. Nobody cares about my views on movies, but anyway:
I've just finished the 70s winners. It was really fun (though I guess not at all surprising) to see how they evolved over that decade, from Patton in 1970 which seems pretty old-fashioned through to Kramer vs. Kramer in 1979 which seems pretty modern. My main takeaways of each:
1970: Patton. Great camerawork for 50 years ago. I'm not big into war films but this is decent.

1971: The French Connection. Interesting plot. Good but not hugely memorable.
1972: The Godfather. Wow. Just incredible. Had forgotten how good it is. Only downside: I still have to read the storyline simultaneously because sometimes it's damn confusing who's who.

1973: The Sting. Lots of fun twists and turns, but I found the soundtrack really crappy.
1974: The Godfather Part II. Again, absolutely excellent. As with Part I, holds up so well after all these years. (Also watched Part III and yes it has nothing on I and II.)

1975: One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest. Really good. Lots of subtle things going on and great acting.
1976: Rocky. Had never seen it before. I mean, it's terrible, right? Ridiculous storyline. Stallone kinda cool, I guess.

1977: Annie Hall. Had seen before but forgotten just how fantastically funny the script is: marvellous.
1978: The Deer Hunter. Brilliant cast. Surprising how long it takes to get into the Vietnam storyline. Some quirky bits to the plot but enjoyable.

1979: Kramer vs. Kramer. As said at start, feels quite modern despite being almost 40 years old. Hoffman repping for #Dads too!
So there we have it. Oh, another fun thing - nice to finally see early work of major actors like Pacino, Keaton, Hoffman, Streep. Looking forward to the 80s...
