You can keep your MCU movie marathons. I’m going to watch all the @DisneyStudios animated classics in order. 58 movies. Here we go #disneychallenge #lockdown
1. Snow White & the 7 Dwarfs (1937)
Gorgeous animation which still holds up (esp the more cartoony aspects). Plot super thin so set pieces go on a bit. An astonishing achievement. Love the lush super literal score. Although the dwarves being into 14 yr old Snow White is creepy
2. Pinocchio (1940)
Much more cartoony but also much more confident in its storytelling. More plot & less filler. The monstro animation looks like a different movie (although beautiful). So many classic tunes too. Also his nose only grows once? Such a tiny part of the story
3. Fantasia (1940). Pretty dull, alas. Even the artwork didn’t do it for me really. The Sorcerers Apprentice is a lovely short but none of the others came close. I prefer more narrative. Also, what’s with the creepy conductor piping up all the time?!
4. Dumbo (1941). Just brilliant. Sequence after sequence is great & heartbreaking. Pink Elephants is terrifying & bat-shit crazy (& feels like an extract from Fantasia). Baby Mine is beautiful. Some clunky story jumps but still flows. The best so far
5. Bambi (1941) The last of the great first wave. Introduces many Disney traditions & I’d never clocked how similar The Lion King is to this. A little slow but gorgeous to look at as expected. The music is a bit of a let down-just choral soundtrack rather than a musical.
