Stop paying (mostly) women, tell them to continue working in a crisis (significant emotional labour & mental load, care work & educational expertise) for free. It& #39;s never "free". Carrying the mental load, emotional labour & performing care - costs - paid or not. #abed #ableg 1/ https://twitter.com/Falkenboss/status/1245749327017852928">https://twitter.com/Falkenbos...
The assumption that (mostly) women, should do any care work because it& #39;s the *right* think to do, adds to the 2nd & 3rd shift, gender wage gap & makes the work invisible. It literally "doesn& #39;t count" - except that if you don& #39;t do it you are a "cruel" "selfish" woman. 2/ #ableg
Imagine telling oil field workers they should work for "free" because prices have tanked, we& #39;re in crisis, "need" oil, but can& #39;t pay them. Ludicrous? It is - but for some reason it& #39;s totally reasonable to suggest this for care work performed by (mostly) women. 3/ #ableg
Add the primary responsibility for providing emotional (& potentially health) support to family & friends, maybe caring for your own kids 24/7 (incl school), a significant increase in burden of cleaning (also expected of (& taken more seriously by) women). 4/ #ableg
Emotional support for needs that have skyrocketed. More people in crisis, anxious kids, (including those you support at school & the ones you have at home), anyone dealing with change & disruption (oh that& #39;s everyone). #ableg 5/
Add the assumption that it& #39;s just "normal" for intimate partner violence to increase in a crisis - & blame the crisis instead of the perps & normalize & justify "passionate", abusive, gaslighting & stalking behaviour in our health minister. #ableg 6/
If you refuse to (or can& #39;t) participate, or set boundaries, you are the "problem". EAs will do this work. Most people (mostly women) in caring professions will. They care. That care is essential for society & economy to function but it& #39;s erased & devalued. #whocounts #ableg 7/
Women will carry more of the load of this crisis. The expectation that we should offload (& erase from the GDP) carework of trained professionals because women should "just care" probably warrants a human rights complaint. #ableg #HumanRights
