Sequel to the original Darkstalkers, Darkstalkers Revenge adds 2 new characters and makes the bosses playable, bringing the roster up to 12.
Each fighter is based on a popular monster trope, from succubi to sasquatch to Frankenstein's monster to vampires.
The game series introduced many mechanics that would become common in Street Fighter and Capcoms VS games.
It plays somewhere between Street Fighters precision and X-men COTAs mayhem, and I feel it gets the balance just about right.
There are few fighters as satisfying to play.
Everything is lovingly animated, backgrounds seem to be in constant motion, characters move and react in exquisite detail. It's all incredibly impressive and you have to see it in motion.
The game seems arcade perfect with not one iota of slowdown present.
The moves are a sight to behold, with some screen filling supers and multiple sprites. The action never let's up.
The music is great too, with a delightful techno style that's fused with a gothic vibes which complements the action perfectly.
Part of Capcoms big three for the Saturn in 1996 along with X-men Children of the Atom and Street Fighter Alpha I feel this game is the best of the bunch. It certainly feels the most refined and feature packed, while the little details I feel makes it the most visually impressive
And while the Saturn never had a port of the original Darkstalkers, a hidden option menu allows music, menu allows music, colours and backgrounds from the first game to be used, effectively making this two games in one!
Darkstalkers is a series that deserves more love and Vampire Hunter is a great entry, positioning itself amongst the best in the genre.
Quite simply there is no better way to play this game, and arguably the original either.
